MOÏZ and Rio Tinto: autonomous sensors for industrial monitoring
MOIZ, Ana Mikelashvili

MOÏZ’s Harvestree technology is featured in Le Lingot, highlighting its application in Rio Tinto’s aluminium operations. Rio Tinto has worked with MOÏZ since 2021 to explore how self-powered sensors can simplify industrial monitoring in environments where maintenance is difficult and costly.

Harvestree converts the temperature difference between equipment surfaces and the surrounding air into electrical energy. In the application described, this powers temperature and voltage monitoring without batteries or external power cables. The system monitors electrical bypass connections used when an electrolysis pot is taken out of service, helping operators detect changes in critical operating conditions while reducing manual inspections.

Following a proof of concept in 2023 and a demonstration at Rio Tinto’s Alma smelter, around 50 modules were ordered in early 2025. The article also highlights Harvestree’s versatility: it can connect up to four sensors for different measurements and transmit their data over a private LoRaWAN network.
